Mickaboo Rescuer of Hurt Angels--Friederike
These cockatiels were lucky has been adopted by an angel volunteer who takes in medically fragile birds. Charly is missing one leg completely and, on the other leg, his foot has grown backwards. Perhaps something terrible happened to him when he was young. He can never sit on a perch, so he has a special cage setup with soft blankets. Charly is the sweetest, most loving bird who loves to be held, cuddled and kissed over and over. He plays all day with his toys, especially untying knots from leather strings. He has taught us that no matter what happens with the body, the heart is most important. Caillou is missing one foot, but that doesn't stop him from getting all around his cage and playing with the other cockatiels! He's in love with Lucky—they are inseparable when out of their cages. Caillou sings songs to Lucy in his sweet little voice Levi nearly died in horrible living conditions in a pet store for reptiles and snakes. Mickaboo took her in, hospitalized and treated her. She has a wonderful new life and fills her world with her smiles. JJ went from being very scared to charismatic and sweet, hanging out on the play station & trying to get the girls' attention. Though he needed medication frequently, he willingly cuddled in his towel for it. He would say "JJ, hi JJ!" over and over... but, sadly, poor JJ lost his battle with cancer this past August. Though he was here only briefly, he will always be remembered. Good luck, JJ—we love you. Luc is very outgoing, with lots of personality! He loves stepping up and giving kisses. He's very healthy and loves to play with his toys and his friends. Lucy was originally diagnosed with terminal heart disease and only weeks to live. Now, seven months later, she still has an enlarged heart but continues to do better than ever! She takes her medications with no complaints and now is doing so well that she can fly without having to catch her breath. Lark has a pretty large mass in her lower body, putting pressure on her organs and air sacs. Though this creates some trouble for her when pooping, she's otherwise in pretty good shape. The mass is still under investigation. Jasmine is on her second Mickaboo go-'round. Her adoptive parent's life has changed, and Jasmine is not getting the attention she needs. She loves to hang around people as they enjoy music and TV, but she may need a little gentle coaching to feel as confident and safe as she wants to be. Kiki (Pippi) has an enlarged liver. Fortunately, no tumor is present; the cause remains a mystery (maybe an infection?). She takes an herbal medication for now and loves to sit on Friederike's shoulder and cuddle. Moon Pie tested positive for giardia. He had to stay in his cage for so long while he was being treated that just flying out of his cage now brings him great happiness! Not big on stepping up to fingers, he decides when to come out of his cage, though he will usually allow a human to carry him back. He sings and whistles, especially when we are near. Missy rubs her head on our hands every chance she gets. Her lower beak grows too much, so we have to trim it back at least once a month. But she eats well and is very sweet and loving! Maisie recently had an ultrasound to check her heart; the heart murmurs with which she came to us are almost completely gone. She's content, active and fun to watch as her feathers grow back. She has a beautiful bright yellow "crown," doesn't she? Nora is a petite lutino who was extremely thin when she came to Mickaboo. After lots of good food, she's much better, and she enjoys the other cockatiels very much. She loves being talked to and cuddled, and she has lots of love to give. Twelve years after adopting Sunny, the daughter of Sunny's family moved away to college, leaving Sunny to be returned to the pet store from which she came. She was so sad that she refused to eat and spent every day on the bottom of the cage. Because she had also lost a lot of calcium due to much egg laying in her life, her bones are very thin, too. But she's now back to her old self and loves her head scratches! Turkey was rescued from a pet store after a manager found him covered with blood. He'd mutilated his back and nearly died of blood loss. Medications for infections and a recent surgery have put him on the track of recovery, but he may always need special attention. Even now, picking at his back is so tempting that he has to wear a collar. Ms. Valentine has a tendency toward weight gain, so she must stay on a consistent diet. For exercise, she runs across the living room for a couple of hours every day, occasionally foraging for food here and there. She loves showers and head scratches!

A JAPANESE HOLOCAUST RESCUER
"Do you remember this?" One day in August 1968, the event happened unexpectedly. A gentleman came over to Sugihara 'Sempo' Chiune suddenly. Showing Sugihara one tattered piece of paper, this gentleman asked him, "Do you remember this, Mr. Sugihara?" The piece of paper was the transit visa that Sugihara issued in Kaunas, Lithuania 28 years ago. 28 years ago, in the summer of 1940, Sugihara Chiune was serving as the Japanese consul in Lithuania. At that time, many Jewish people fled from Poland where had been occupied by Nazi Germany were crowding into Lithuania. Jewish refugees were trying desperately to get visa at foreign embassies or consulates in Lithuania. However, the Soviet Union, which adopted anti-Semitic policy (anti-Semitic=anti-Jewish) annexed Lithuania as a part of the Soviet Union, requested countries to close foreign embassies or consulates in Lithuania. The last foreign consulate left in Lithuania was Japanese consulate. So, many Jewish people who sought visa for the purpose of escaping to another country crowded into the Japanese consulate in Kaunas, Lithuania. At first, although Japanese government was repeatedly requested to cooperate in anti-Semitic policy by Nazi Germany, Japanese government took a neutral position in an official manner. However, Japanese Foreign Ministry kept tough visa requirements. On July 18th in 1940, Sugihara Chiune cabled Japanese Foreign Ministry in Tokyo as to the approval of emergency visa. However, Tokyo replied the next day and told Sugihara to keep visa requirements. Sugihara cabled Tokyo several times. But Tokyo repeated the same response. A week later, on July 25th, Sugihara decided on his own accord and started giving Jewish refugees transit visa for humanitarian reasons. Sugihara Chiune kept writing transit visa in a little more than a month between July 25th and September 5th, though Sugihara received the expulsion order from the Soviet Union epeatedly. The number of transit visa that Sugihara gave Jewish refugees was 2,139. But this number 2,139 is just the number of visa that Sugihara numbered and recorded. Sugihara stopped numbering visa for laborsaving as the Japanese consulate closing day neared. Sugihara kept writing visa in the station until immediately before the train departure. So, the total number of visa that Sugihara gave Jewish refugees in a little more than a month is supposed to have reached more than twice the number 2,139. On September 5th in 1940, Sugihara Chiune and his family was in the station to board a train for Berlin. Jewish refugees who had known that Sugihara would go on board a train on the day gathered at the station. Sugihara wrote visa on the platform. After he and his family went on board, Jewish refugees hanged on the windows of the train. Sugihara wrote visa from the window of the train. When the train started moving, he couldn't write visa any more. Everybody was waving their hands. One of them called out, "Thank you, Mr.Sugihara. We will come to see you again." And he came running after the train. After that, Sugihara and his family lived several cities (Prague, Kaliningrad and etc.) and they lived in Bucharest, Romania when World War II ended in 1945. Sugihara and his family were detained by the Soviet military that invaded Bucharest then and they were sent to prison camp (Ghencea, Romania). It was April in 1947 that Sugihara and his family returned to Japan. But Japanese Foreign Ministry didn't welcome Sugihara and persuaded him into his resignation because of Ministry's downsizing. Sugihara changed jobs frequently after resigning from Japanese Foreign Ministry. "Do you remember this?" One day in August 1968, the event happened unexpectedly. A gentleman came over to Sugihara Chiune suddenly. Showing Sugihara one tattered piece of paper, this gentleman asked him, "Do you remember this, Mr. Sugihara?" The piece of paper was the transit visa that Sugihara issued in Kaunas, Lithuania 28 years ago. "At last, I found you, Mr. Sugihara. We still can't forget you." This gentleman's name is B.Gehashra Nishri. B.Gehashra Nishri was the counsellor for Israeli embassy in Japan. B.Gehashra Nishri had been looking for Sugihara Chiune since that station. That station was Kaunas' rail station in Lithuania. In 1985, Sugihara 'Senpo' Chiune was given the title of "the Righteous Among the Nations"for his contribution to rescue more than 6,000 Jewish from Holocaust by the government of Israel. A Japanese Holocaust Rescuer - Sugihara 'Sempo' Chiune
"Do you remember this?" It was an event in August, 1968. A gentle man visited SUGIHARA. This gentleman showed SUGIHARA one sheet of paper that had become tattered. It was the visa that SUGIHARA issued in Kaunas of Lithuania 28 years ago. "I found you finally, Mr. Sugihara. We have never forgotten you." This gentleman's name was B.Gehashra Nishri. In the fall of 1939, SUGIHARA Chiune was sent by the Japanese government to Kaunas (Kovno), Lithuania, to open a consulate. He had barely settled into his new post when the Germany invaded Poland, forcing a wave of Jewish refugees to flee eastward into neighboring Lithuania. The desperate refugees brought with them chilling tales of German atrocities against the Jewish population. SUGIHARA Chiune was one of the most important rescuers of Jews during the Nazi Holocaust. An estimated 40,000 descendants of the Jewish refugees he saved are alive today because of his courageous actions. The story of Chiune Sugihara is among the most remarkable of the second world war. SUGIHARA 'Sempo' Chiune was the Japanese Consul General in Kaunas (Kovno), Lithuania in 1939 and 1940. When World War II broke out, Consul Sugihara's office was flooded with visa requests from thousands of Jews fleeing German-occupied Poland. With the encouragement of his wife Yukiko, Sugihara issued Japanese transit visas to as many as 6,000 Polish Jews. SUGIHARA acted on his own without the official permission of his government. In issuing the visas, SUGIHARA felt that he was risking his career, his future and even his safety. After the war, he was let go from the diplomatic service, and rather than being honored for his humanitarian initiative, he spent his life in disgrace, never recognized by Japan during his lifetime. B. Gehashra Nishri visited SUGIHARA in 1968, he was Counsellor of Israeli embassy. When the train that SUGIHARA's family boarded was leaving from the Kaunas station 28 years ago, Nishri shouted "Thank you, SUGIHARA!! I never forget you. I will come to see you again!" to the train. Nishri could find SUGIHARA finally after an interval of 28 years. 45 years after signing the visas, SUGIHARA was asked why he did it. He replied: "They were human beings and they needed help. I'm glad I found the strength to make the decision to give it to them."
